This Sprinter Camper Has a Rooftop Tent You Can Reach From Inside

The most interesting door in Activan’s Land Yacht is in the ceiling. A telescoping ladder leads through it to a rooftop tent, so whoever gets the upstairs bed can climb up from inside the camper instead of stepping out to reach an exterior ladder.

The Nevada builder based the conversion on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a 170-inch wheelbase. There’s a fixed bed in the back and a kitchen and enclosed shower in the middle. The hatch gives the van a second place to sleep without asking anyone to turn the front seats into a bed.

The front seats can stay a living room

Two captain’s chairs sit just behind the cab. Swivel the driver and passenger seats around at camp and the four chairs form a lounge by the sliding door. Keeping that space separate from the beds means someone can head to sleep while everyone else is still talking up front.

Behind the chairs, Activan splits the galley across the aisle. The enclosed bathroom gives the shower a dedicated spot. The rear queen bed stays in place above the garage, where bulky gear can live without being moved to make room for a mattress each night.

What changes when the second bed is on the roof

The tent takes an extra mattress out of the floor plan, but the ladder still needs floor space when it’s in use. It drops into the front seating area, so it’s worth watching how it sits next to those chairs. And anyone who wants to avoid climbing a ladder has the downstairs bed.

Activan’s tour is especially helpful here. The first minute shows where the hatch sits in relation to the chairs, then the walk-through moves back through the kitchen, shower and rear storage.

Where the Land Yacht gets its name

The boating references are easiest to spot when you look up and down. A slatted cherry ceiling runs over the cabin and teak-and-holly flooring runs below it. White shiplap and navy cabinets fill the space between, with brass-colored pulls picking up the warmer tones in the wood.

The layout is the detail to borrow if you’re comparing Sprinter conversions. A second permanent bed would take up space the Land Yacht uses for seating or storage. Here the extra berth is available when guests come along, and the main cabin keeps the same floor plan when they don’t.
